Summer Sands Ullal

Villas of Summer Sands

I walked barefoot on the sea shore of Ullal. It had been quite late by the time I arrived in Ullal and the sun had already set leaving behind glimpses of its existence with the scarlet smeared sky. I found the coastline across Dakshin Kannada very clean and less crowded. Good for me I preferred staying in the company of nature avoiding the hustle and bustle of hawkers, vendors and tourists. Well I was in Summer Sands a forty year old beach resort that is situated on the shores of Ullal.

APPROACH & ACCOMMODATION

A picture perfect location it couldn’t be better than this. Summer Sands is close to Mangalore and is accessible by road, air and rail. Run by Mr. Aloysius Albuquerque Pai also called as Loy and his family, the resort is the best to stay in terms of ambience, food and amenities. Mr. Loy is always available for a little chat on the history of Ullal (Abbakkarani), places to visit and suggest the local dishes that are to be tried in the resort.

I lived in the classic cottage and was very comfortable with the room. Double bed with a study table, a dressing table and living area with sofa and television was the decor. The cottages, villas, bars, restaurants etc have been built in Mangalorean style high rise and roof made of Mangalorean tiles. Bathing robes to take a dip in the swimming pool or the sea were placed in the cupboard. Toiletries like handmade soaps, loofah, aromatherapy body wash and shampoo were placed in the bathroom to take care of my needs and pamper me.

FOOD

Food in Summer Sands is a riot with options of Mangalorean, Goan, Portuguese, Bunt and Konkani cuisine. Breakfast is complimentary in the resort and you have various options like English, Continental, South Indian etc at the Courtyard Restaurant. For lunch and dinner do go for the local delicacies like the Kori Roti, Fish Murmuro. Kori Roti is basically crisp pancakes had with chicken stew and Murmuro is prepared by baking fish fillet smeared with masala in a plantain leaf. Various sea food and pork delicacies can be enjoyed alfresco style on the beach with a candle light. Do not miss on the vanilla ice cream with ginger essence which is another the signature dish of Summer Sands. On weekends there would be live music to give you company on the beach.

The  Alexis Lounge Bar and the multicuisine restaurant The Memories of Joanna are indoor restaurants which can as well be tried when in Summer Sands.
